Scenarios Assessment and Transitions towards a Sustainable Euro-Mediterranean in 2030
سبت, 03/08/2013 - 11:17 | by adminIn the aftermath of the 2011 Arab uprisings in the southern and eastern Mediterranean, the region has reached a turning point in its history, presenting as many opportunities as challenges. The European Union itself is facing challenging conditions following the financial and economic crises that have hit its periphery. This MEDPRO Policy Paper examines and assesses various possible scenarios that could play out in EU-Mediterranean relations over the next two decades and offers recommendations towards sustainable socio-economic development in the region.

Benchmarking the Financial Sector in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Countries and Projecting 2030 Financial Sector Scenarios
جمعة, 02/08/2013 - 11:46 | by adminThis paper aims at devising scenarios for the development of the financial system in the southern and eastern Mediterranean countries (SEMCs), for the 2030 horizon. The results of the simulations indicate that bank credit to the private sector, meta-efficiency and stock market turnover could reach at best 108%, 78% and 121%, respectively, if the SEMCs adopt the best practices in Europe. These scenarios are much higher than those of the present levels in the region but still lower than the best performers in Europe.

Energy Efficiency: Trends and Perspectives in the Southern Mediterranean
جمعة, 02/08/2013 - 11:35 | by adminThis paper has two objectives. First, it attempts to establish the potential of policies on energy efficiency and energy demand-side management in the southern Mediterranean region. Second, by examining past trends in energy intensity and trends up to 2030, it analyses the prospects and costs of such policies, compared with expected developments in the price of energy resources.

The Relationship between Energy and Socio-Economic Development in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean
جمعة, 02/08/2013 - 11:34 | by adminThis report aims to identify, explain and detail the links and interactions in Southern Mediterranean Countries (SMCs) between energy supply and demand and socio-economic development, as well as the potential role of energy supply and demand policies on both. Another related aim is to identify and analyse, in a quantitative and qualitative way, the changing role of energy (both demand and supply) in southern Mediterranean economies, focusing on its positive and negative impact on socio-economic development.
This report investigates:

A New Euro-Mediterranean Energy Roadmap for a Sustainable Energy Transition in the Region
جمعة, 02/08/2013 - 11:33 | by adminThis paper addresses the urgent need for a sustainable energy transition in the southern and eastern Mediterranean region. It analyses the unsustainable burden of universal energy subsidies and calls for new development paths unlocking the huge potential for low-cost energy efficiency and demand-side management as well as for renewable energy. It argues that a new structure of regional and interconnected energy markets is needed.

MEDPRO Booklet
جمعة, 02/08/2013 - 11:28 | by adminFunded under the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme and coordinated by CEPS Senior Fellow Dr. Rym Ayadi, the MEDPRO project started in March 2010, a few months before the Arab Spring unfurled. The three-year project aims to contribute to the reform process in the political and socio-economic agendas of southern and eastern Mediterranean countries by broadening the level of knowledge on the numerous challenges faced by the region.

Economic and climate change pressures on biodiversity in southern Mediterranean coastal areas
جمعة, 02/08/2013 - 11:26 | by adminThis paper establishes and measures key biodiversity and ecosystem health indicators and the number of world heritage sites in coastal areas at global level. It then estimates – econometrically – the indicators’ influence on the provision of tourism values through the marine ecosystem function as a harbour of biodiversity, and as a provider of amenity values and marine cultural identity. The report then focuses on the MEDPRO region, providing some estimates of the potential impact of climate change on these services for a given temperature increase scenario.

Population Scenarios and Policy Implications for Southern Mediterranean Countries, 2010-2050
جمعة, 02/08/2013 - 11:23 | by adminIn this MEDPRO Policy Paper, four population scenarios were derived that describe indicators of demographic behaviour for people living in different future political-economic contexts. The paper explores future trends in i) population growth at regional and national levels, ii) working age populations, and iii) elderly populations.

Macroeconomic Scenarios for the Euro-Mediterranean Area: Quantification based on the GEM-E3 model
جمعة, 02/08/2013 - 11:16 | by adminThis study quantifies four alternative macroeconomic scenarios for the southern and eastern Mediterranean countries (SEMCs), with the use of GEM-E3, a general equilibrium model. The four scenarios are: i) the continuation of current policies, ii) southern Mediterranean–EU cooperation, iii) a global opening of the southern Mediterranean countries and cooperation with the rest of the Middle East and other developing countries like China, and iv) a deterioration in the regional political climate and a failure of cooperation.

Quantitative Reference Scenario for the MEDPRO Project
جمعة, 02/08/2013 - 11:16 | by adminIn general equilibrium models the reference scenario is important, as the evaluation of the alternative policies modelled is based on their deviation from the reference scenario. The reference scenario relates to the development of an economic outlook for each region and sector of the model. This means that assumptions are made about the main drivers of growth, e.g. population growth and technical progress. This report provides the main assumptions used for the development of the reference scenario in the MEDPRO project.
